FYI: National Hat Day is January 15th, but that doesn't mean it's the only day you can show your appreciation for these wonderful noggin covers. Whether you want to protect a bald spot, or you want to step up your fashion game, it doesn't matter: anyone and everyone should wear hats! Don't know where to start? Then read on. We'll tell you all about hat types, terms, and styles.
Hat Types
Here are some basic hat types to consider:
Fedora: Once a hat of the gangsters, now a hipster's choice. It has a wide brim and is usually made of felt.
Baseball cap: One of the most popular types of hats. It's made of cotton, wool, or polyester and has an adjustable band at the back and a visor in the front. They usually come with a team/company name or logo embroidered on the front.
Beanie: Great for the winter, as it's cozy and comfortable. There's no brim and can be made out of a wide variety of material.
Flat cap: These are what you see golfers wear. Super dapper! They can be made of leather, corduroy, or linen.
Some Hat Terms Want to learn the lingo? Then here are some key terms:
Bill: This is the area that sits flat around your head and provides some shade. A "stingy" bill is a very small one.
Crown: This is the top part of the hat that sits on your head. Makes sense!
Snapback: A snapback hat is synonymous for "baseball cap," but much cooler. "Snapback" refers to the adjustable strap that you find on the back of these hats.
Fitted: These are baseball caps that are usually sized by 1/8th of an inch or offer a fitted size range. This allows you to get a snug hat that fits just right.
UPF: This stands for "Ultraviolet Protective Factor." Ratings range from 15 to 50+, with a higher number being better protection from the sun.
Hat Styles The greatest thing about hats is they come in all sorts of colors, patterns, and styles. Here are the 3 main styles you can find:
Casual: This is something you can wear around the house, with or without company. Beanies and baseball caps fall into this category.
Urban: Urban hats are for people who want to make a fashion statement. Because of this, there's a wide variety of hat types you can wear; what makes it urban is the print and outfit you wear.
Formal: This is when you wear your Sunday best. To impress company, you'd probably pick a fedora or flat cap.
